Looking back, I'm pretty sure you are after `cmdcherck`: it's just we don't advertise it and it likely needs a bit more work to report better (and skip special cases).
I'll need to look back, but I think the reason we didn't check variants is they can always be added using `\cs_generate_variant:Nn`, which contrasts with the base functions.
