Description

Hi, I'm on macOS 26.1 on two machines, a M4 Mac Mini and a M3 Pro MacBook Pro and the same thing occurs. I really like using the 'Ice Bar' in settings to have the hidden items appear in a bar under the main menubar, but since upgrading to the public release of Tahoe (26.0 - never had any of the betas) if I pull up settings, select 'Use Ice Bar' then close settings, and tap on the Ice Icon (I use the ellipsis option for the icon), it causes Ice to crash. I can restart Ice, and then go back into settings and turn Ice Bar off, and then it works fine, with hidden items appearing in the menu bar when I tap on the icon (though this is frustrating on the MacBook Pro because of the notch covering up most of my icons, hence why I used Ice Bar) and Ice not crashing. Would really like if this could be fixed if at all possible. I am running version 0.11.12, and had hoped 26.1 would fix whatever was causing the bug, but unfortunately it hasn't. Thanks Jordan! :)

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select 'Use Ice Bar'
  3. Close Settings
  4. tap on Ice Icon to reveal hidden menubar items
  5. Ice crashes
  6. Restart Ice
  7. Open Settings
  8. Turn off 'Use Ice Bar'
  9. Close Settings
  10. Ice works

For those on macOS 26 (Tahoe) you can use the dev build to fix this https://github.com/jordanbaird/Ice/releases/tag/0.11.13-dev.2 It needs to be installed manually rather than with brew or an update from an old version, but it seems to keep old settings and preferences from any previous versions.

Same here macOS 26.1, all the problems got fixed by installing the dev build.

For who need use brew: first uninstall the stable version then use "brew install --cask jordanbaird-ice@beta" to install the dev version

I wonder why the menu bar layout page is always loading. I tried to reopen and reinstall Ice but it still not worked.

Hi Jordan, hello y'all,

I got the same problems:

  1. ICE CRASHES when clicking on the menu bar-symbol.
  2. In settings, NO ITEMS (ICONS) are shown AT ALL.

I'll try the dev build next.

Q U E S T I O N : Will I have to delete ICE first, or can I just install the dev buld "on top" of the existing ICE-installation?

Please, please make ICE work as it used to! Just installed TAHOE, and I'm already fed up with the bubble-gum look; whats worse, my launchpad seems to be got killed by apple... great job, apple!

Best regards!

EDIT: Installed the dev build:

  1. ICE DOES NOT CRASH ANYMORE!
  2. In setrtings, ALL ICONS ARE BACK!
  3. In TAHOE 26.1, it seems I DO NOT HAVE TO ACTIVATE "MENU BAR BACKGROUND"! I like my ICE-bar below the ICE-icon, and this works (ICE bar is grey, but hey: IT WORKS!).

To the devs: GOOD JOB GUYS! Your software works better than apple's original software sometimes... RESPECT! ;o)

Interesting nuances about this crash on Ice v0.11.12 and macOS Tahoe 26.1...

  • When enabling "Use Ice Bar", if the location is set to "Dynamic" or "Ice icon", then clicking on the Ice menubar icon will cause the crash.
  • If the location is set to "Mouse pointer", the crash does not happen -- but the popup Ice Bar is empty.

As others have noticed, I do not see any icons in the Menu Bar Layout section. Not sure if the two issues are related.

Thank you for your hard work on Ice.

Update:

  • The dev build 0.11.13-dev.2 fixes both issues.

For who need use brew: first uninstall the stable version then use "brew install --cask jordanbaird-ice@beta" to install the dev version

This method is simple and effective.

I'm on MacOS 26.1 running 0.11.13-dev2 and Ice doesn't work at all, not even after reboot. The Ice icon shows on the menu bar and it goes solid/hollow when I click it. I can right click it and get the settings, but what I don't get are my icons. Turning ice bar on or off doesn't make any difference, nor does uninstalling and reinstalling Ice.

File a different issue. Try turning off all apps in menu bar settings and turning them back on one by one to see if it's a specific app causing the crash. Try Bartender.

Using dev build works for me w/ iStat Menus, Tailscale, Text Sniper, and Little Snitch in my menu bar. No problems loading Ice settings or seeing menu bar icons in the "Menu Bar Layout" pane in Ice settings. Tahoe 26.1.

I couldn’t make it work. I’ve installed Bartender which works fine.

Same here on two machines running macOS Tahoe 26.1 (25B78) & Ice Version 0.11.12. I desperately need "Ice Bar" to fix the notch and gain access to hidden icons.

@jordanbaird time for a release?

A small data point... Ice had been working fine for me. Then, on Mac forum, someone reported that Ice fails when macOS menubar hiding is enabled. As a test, I turned on menubar hiding and then turned it off. After doing that, Ice now fails as described in this bug.
