Description

I get the message "Unable to display menu bar items" and no icons shown under "Visible" and "Hidden" sections under Menu Bar Layout of Ice settings as well as upon clicking the Ice icon in my menu bar.

I've granted all necessary system permissions for Ice; quitting and restarting Ice; reinstalling Ice; enabling/disabling "Show menu bar background" in System Settings, but this issue persists.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open Ice Settings
  2. Go to Menu Bar Layout
  3. Click the Ice icon in the menu bar

Ice Version

0.11.13-dev.2

macOS Version

Tahoe 26.0

Same here.

Clicking the ice icon in the menu bar caused the app to crash.

Yes the app crashes if clicked on the menu bar icon which is kept to expand.

Same here. My workaround is to quit using Ice until it's fixed. LOL

using the latest beta seems to work.

As stated above, this bug affects (at least for me) the latest beta, 0.11.13-dev.2😬

I get the same message with Beta 2 on macOS 26. The previous Beta 1 didn’t have this issue.

i also have the same issue after the update to Tahoe

Same here — and with the dark theme, the message ‘Unable to display menu bar items’ doesn’t appear.

This preview works for me though.

But moving around the icons here wont.

I have to press Cmd and drag the Icons I want to hide directly on the menu bar. That is how I kept what I wanted outside and others hidden.

On my system, this issue seems related to the Displays has separate Spaces setting:

Image

When the setting is disabled, the menu items are not displayed, and I get no indication that Ice tries to record the screen:

Image

But if I re-enable the setting, log out and back in, then the items are correctly displayed, and I do get the screen recording indication:

Image

I keep this setting disabled because I use AeroSpace.

Same here — and with the dark theme, the message ‘Unable to display menu bar items’ doesn’t appear.

This is exactly what I'm running into in Tahoe macOS 26.0.1

I did deletion of Ice and clean-up using CleanMyMac and reinstalled Ice from the beta and it is now running properly.

mm if you mean having Dark Mode enabled in System Settings, I did have it on and still got "Unable to display menu bar items". But sometimes I would have blanks under all fields in Menu Bar Layout i.e. no "Unable to display menu bar items"--but also no icons.

@vanderwal do you know what exactly CleanMyMac deleted? i'd love to try this manually

I did deletion of Ice and clean-up using CleanMyMac and reinstalled Ice from the beta and it is now running properly.

I fully uninstalled (plists and everything), reinstalled 0.11.13-dev.2 and still get the same "Unable to display menu bar items" message.

Macos: 26.1 Ice: 0.11.13-dev 2

Same problem, same solution.

I have Displays has separate Spaces disabled and still get the error. I tried enabling that setting and redisabling and nothing changes.
