You need to set the crop area on a page filled with text from top to bottom. The semi-crop mode only crops _more_ when needed, but never less. That's why...

You're right; I thought it was still doing the semi-auto crop in the Reader view (I could have sworn it did, hah). I'll take a look again.

Ok, considering the trade-offs required it may be best to just keep it the way it is. It works quite well for all kinds of layouts.
The Document Columns selector is a hint for the reflow engine to properly process the columns. (Long press on Document Column to read the help text.)
