fix (Strava) login on Wear OS

Open tromshusky opened this issue 1 year ago • 4 comments

The App doesnt let me login to Strava on Wear OS. most likely because Wear OS doesnt support android.webkit. the menu closes when i press on Strava.

Would be nice to use Runnerup so i can use the smartwatch for tracking without a google account (official strava app that needs smartphone connection).

WearOS is unfortunately disabled in the latest release as Play Services version was obsolete. I do not have a Wear device and cannot update the code (some redesign is required). The wear app is not standalone, you need the phone app and probably a google account to connect to the wear device (not sure what is required, have never used wearos).

But Strava login should not use WebView. I looked at that at one point, but it was more complicated than I expected.

I have a Galaxy Watch 7. Anything I can do to help? It would be nice to glance at my current pace/distance/duration/etc while I'm running.

I am a developer, so I don't mind getting into the code, but it has been a good while since I've done any Android development. I do need to get back into it, so if you have any pointers as to where I should start in your codebase to update/implement this, I'm all ears. Thanks!

Before 1db19553243e9de42cafe311d334430eb717eeb5, GE had a WearOS app that could be used as a viewer, it was not a standalone application. That had to be sideloaded in Wear as companion-only apps are no longer supported. This had to be removed as the Play services were obsolete and APIs have changed, a rewrite is needed. This should not be too hard if you have a Wear device.

To list the app in Play the app must be able to run stand-alone, that is a little more work. I have not investigated what is required.

(Wear was a reason why I got involved from the beginning, but I still find Wear devices to be worse than Garmin etc.)
