Yes, the reason it's not officially supported is because of issues like the one you mentioned.
I could see this being implemented as part of the API.
Considering adding a feature to the config API to check if an app is running or not, would work for this use case.
Any help here is welcome. I have limited experience working on macOs application interfaces so it's unlikely I would be able to deliver this feature. I'm looking into alternative methods...
