if there is an error in code board gets stuck in REPL

Using with a Raspberry Pi Pico circuit python 7.11 vs code 1.63.2 OSX Big Sur 11.6.2 Save a file onto pico and if the code has an error it reboots into REPL - you can't get out of unplug pico and replug makes no. difference. Cant do anything!! Serial monitor also vanishes and you have to quit everything overall very buggy.....
