Not synchronizing external changes from carddav?
Hi,
I'm currently trying CategoryManager 6.4 with Thunderbird 128.7.1esr and a gmx.net carddav addressbook. I noticed the following:
- Category assignments from within Thunderbird/CategoryManager are synchronized correctly with gmx (as groups).
- Assignment/removal of groups in gmx is not synchronized back into Thunderbird/CategoryManager. Neither manual addressbook sync nor restart did help.
Question: Is synchronization of external group change supposed to work or is it simply not supported? I remember having used CategoryManager years before with some third-party carddav sync provider, and I think the sync was working back then. Could it be Thunderbird's built-in carddav sync that causes problems?
Aside from that let me express my appreciation for making that great and useful addon.
Thanks a lot, Alex
Issue https://github.com/jobisoft/CategoryManager/issues/106 might have the same cause.
@jobisoft is there a way to have this add-on log somewhere on levels info, warning, error, debug. If not, should I make seperate issue? (This might also help users with other issues.)
The syncing is not done by this add-on, but by Thunderbird's CardDAV implementation.
Can you see on GMX the raw VCARD per contact? It would be interesting to see, how a VCARD looks after Thunderbird modified it (adding categories in CatMan), and how it looks after GMX modified it (removing of groups in GMX)
Hi, The export function of gmx is not helpful, it doesn't include the group/category. I'll check if the vCard can be obtained differently ...
Btw I vaguely remember that TbSync with DAV provider used to work well with gmx in the past. Let's hope that Thunderbird's built-in sync does not do something differently. Could it be that it's simply skipping group import because its own address book has no use for that?
I can see the groups I have created on Android in Fossify Contacts via DAVx⁵ appear in DAViCal database. (It looks like my contacts are CardDAV v4 and groups v3, but that should not be a problem.)
So, you might be right that Thunderbird CardDAV sync is not picking them up. Searching in Thunderbird Bugzilla, I found:
- https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1728770
- https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1764184
I'm not an expert on CardDAV. Can some of you have a look at these bugs and see how this can be moved forward? Also, please vote on any relevant bugs in Bugzilla.
@PanderMusubi Thanks for looking into this. To me the last of the bugs in your list seems most relevant (1764184). How do I vote for it? I couldn't spot any "me too" button or the like.
After you have logged in to Bugzilla, this button will appear
Alright, voted.
