Namcoin support

Open probar opened this issue 10 years ago • 25 comments

jminardi, If you're interested , please put some namecoin record that includes the address and a BTSync secret , and i'll work on integrating namecoin.

I am very interested in integrating namecoin. What needs to be done to move this forward?

jminardi avatar Mar 20 '14 21:03 jminardi

Regarding namecoin registration:

http://christopherpoole.github.io/registering-a-.bit-domain-with-namecoin/

Don't forget to enter key:value detailing your syncnet address in the end ,something like syncnet:secret.

Haven't found a nicer way yet. onename.io looks nicer but doesn't support extra fields currently.

I know @Ademan was working on namecoin integration at one point, it might be worth checking if he has any usable code.

jminardi avatar Mar 21 '14 03:03 jminardi

jack, i continued with ademan's namecoin and it now seems to work, but i need some namecoin record to test against.I would have done it myself but pretty short of cash currently. A good name for the data-field should be ['syncnet']['secret'] and it should include the secret(possibly your site).

Awesome! I think we should register syncnet.bit and have it be the default homepage. I will look into registering it, how much does it cost?

jminardi avatar Mar 24 '14 17:03 jminardi

Good idea.I think it costs $10.

Hey guys, I'm one of the core developers of the OneName protocol.

And to be clear, any fields can be embedded in OneName data blobs. However, only certain fields are viewable on OneName profile crawlers (including OneName.io).

Check out my profile data on OneName: https://onename.io/ryanshea.json

If you have any questions about integrating OneName into syncnet, I'd be happy to provide my assistance.

Also, domain names on Namecoin are only a few cents.

@rxl I've registered my name and email at onename.io, how would I go about registering syncnet.bit? I own some bitcoins, I assume I need to exchange those for a namecoin?

jminardi avatar Mar 24 '14 22:03 jminardi

@rxl , really , only a few cents ? Where ? dotbit takes $10.

probar avatar Mar 24 '14 22:03 probar

@jminardi I don't mind registering syncnet.bit just give me the syncnet hash. Alternatively you can exchange for namecoins on btc-e, vircurex(eh maybe not), kraken, cryptsy, bter or others. A note about btc-e, I used them, but the owners are anonymous and that makes many people (rightfully) skeptical. They impose a 3 day account age before you can make withdrawals. To minimize risk, if you were to use btc-e, I'd register your account now, and then in three days, transfer in a small amount of BTC, make your namecoin purchase, and withdraw to your own wallet immediately (that's should have done).

@probar if you interact with namecoin with your own wallet, registering a domain is ~0.02 NMC which is a couple of cents. I guess those "we'll register namecoin addresses for you" sites are priced to compete with ICANN domains, and for the convenience. if you're comfortable, it's much much much less expensive to register yourself.

@Ademan that's exactly right. They charge $10 for convenience. Meanwhile you can register domains for ~$0.10 if you use Namecoin-Qt or namecoind.

shea256 avatar Mar 25 '14 01:03 shea256

I know you guys might be aware but just to be clear, OneName is separate from Namecoin DNS.

A few points:

  • Namecoin is a generic key-value store.
  • Namecoin has multiple namespaces.
  • By convention, developers use the d/ namespace to refer to .bit domains.
  • By convention, developers use the u/ namespace to refer to OneName usernames.

So I tried to sign up for a few exchanges, and they wanted me to scan in my ID. Would anyone be willing to send me like 0.5 namecoins? I can send some bitcoins at the current market price.

jminardi avatar Mar 26 '14 22:03 jminardi

I'd be happy to. What's your namecoin address?

shea256 avatar Mar 26 '14 22:03 shea256

Awesome! My namecoin address is:

NFErgw2xcDLedQrLGfNxJTLGbXqExTdhcQ

What is your bitcoin address?

jminardi avatar Mar 26 '14 22:03 jminardi

My bitcoin address is here: https://onename.io/ryanshea

shea256 avatar Mar 26 '14 22:03 shea256

Sent!

shea256 avatar Mar 26 '14 22:03 shea256

Great, and I should have realized your address would be on onename. I just sent you .0025 BTC

jminardi avatar Mar 26 '14 22:03 jminardi

Awesome, thanks!

shea256 avatar Mar 26 '14 22:03 shea256

Just curious, how did you pay me? Which wallet did you use? Did you copy-paste the address, scan the QR code or click the button to open a desktop wallet?

shea256 avatar Mar 26 '14 22:03 shea256

I scanned the QR code with the coinbase app on my phone. Seemed like the simplest way to do it.

jminardi avatar Mar 26 '14 22:03 jminardi

By the way, I signed up for onename.io back when someone (you?) posted it on reddit. I stupidly didnt' add my own bitcoin address. I couldn't find any way to update my account, is there something I am missing? My account is onename.io/jminardi
