An update: Using environment variables works! I've got that all up and running, and it unblocked me on a bunch of stuff. Thanks for all the help, everyone!

I'm getting different, but still broken behavior in `dagger` when I do something similar. It's causing cycles.

Note: we are experiencing a version of this within a Dagger user's config.
