Zotfile cannot move or rename one attachment but does so successfully for the other pdfs.
System: Pop OS 20.04, Zotero: 5.0.96.2 installed via flatpak, Zotfile: 5.0.16-fx.xpi. Other details: In zotfile preferences I have set a custom location to move the attachments.
Bug: I drag and drop document_1.pdf and create a parent item and try to rename the attachment, which should ideally move the document to my custom location and rename it. Instead, I get the error "Attachments skipped because they are top-level items, snapshots or the file does not exist".
When I drag and drop document_2.pdf and do the same, zotero/zotfile renames and moves the attachments successfully.
Please see the linked video for exactly what happens.
Thank you. This was additionally posted on Zotero forums here
Thanks for taking the time to record a video to show exactly what you have tried in accomplishing your task. Unfortunately, the link indicates that the video file was removed. Given that the behavior works for one pdf and not another, I think the question you should be asking is "What is special about the pdf file which doesn't work?" If you could reupload the video and perhaps also the two pdf files, I think we could make progress on this issue. Otherwise, I would appreciate if you could close the issue to keep the issue space well maintained.
Hi. Unfortunately, I might not have the same video. However, I am planning on re-recording it. You may close this issue (now or can you wait 7 days?) and I intend to reopen it when I am done with video. Otherwise, I will open a new issue if reopening is not possible.
Thanks

Hi I also found this problem, and this is making my literature collections in such a mess.
So usually I dragged a pdf alone or to an existing item of citation to complete the file linking . The file name firstly changed by the builtin protocol itself, then I selected and rename a citation via ZotFile for the first time and it works (the file was renamed and was sent to the customized location, and also showing a chain in the icon).
(One intention of using the 'Rename Attachments' from ZotFile is that it can arrange or refresh the file location following the customized setting, because zotero just put everyting in one folder. However, it doesn't work everytime and a file sorting button might be necessary???)
In one situation, after the aforementioned process, I resort the item of citation in collections and "rename" for the location to refresh. And it pops up the error of 'Attachments skipped because they are top-level items, snapshots or the file does not exist'.
Another situation could be, after I dragged and renamed via ZotFile successfully, I renamed the file again via builtin method (right click and select 'Rename File From Patent Metadata') and it successed. Again I renamed it via ZotFile (select 'Manage Attachments/Rename Attachments') then I get the error of 'Attachments skipped because they are top-level items, snapshots or the file does not exist'. (I intentionally repeat the rename procedure for a total of 2 times)
Hope that could provide any additional informations.
Same problem here, any ideas?
I faced the same issue starting on 2023-08-01. I went to ZotFile Preferences > Advanced Settings > unchecked "only work with the following file types". This restored the functionality.
