Thanks @jm-c - that makes sense, but was not very clear in the manual. I'll PR some suggested changes in a few days.

Does this also need a `get_converter`?

First there is a constrained layout manager PR #9082. > Since the space for the Axes is provided by the Figure, I never really knew how to get it to...

Yeah, and I don't understand the Transforms. Whats happening now is that `set_aspect('equal')` is defining a cartesian box in the middle of the axis with relative limits 0-1, 0-1 that...

It's pretty hard to guess what the error could be. I presume somehow `length` in the above has come out as NaN, but that would mean your transform stack got...

Did you try removing the (few) plot elements in the test script? Maybe something triggers the error that will make this easier to track down? Do other examples work?

Obviously the transform should not be nan here, but maybe it just hasn't been setup properly yet and we can work around this. Can you check for length being nan...

But does it happen for all matplotlibs? Or is v3.7.4 always OK?

@timhoffm I hope we have vanishingly few users who can't do figure(figsize=(6, 6/2)) so I don't see the advantage of figure(figsize=figsize(6, aspect=2)) I think what @oscargus is after is the...

So I am not good at fine-tuning in aspect space - much more comfortable just using inches. So one possibility is to let `figsize=4` mean the figure is 4" high,...
