My problem with xmitgcm was that it didn't work on file systems with ulimit set.

.... though its possible my attempts with mdsio and `xmitgcm` are outdated? https://github.com/MITgcm/xmitgcm/pull/25 seems to indicate that it fixed too-many file errors. Possible it fixed my memory errors as well.
