I know it's beyond the scope of a simple applescript, but to me, the full package for this functionality would be a little status icon in the menu bar and the ability to triple-tap the fn key to toggle the status.

I'd be happy to pay $1.00 for that in the App Store given how frequently I need to toggle this setting.

(ridiculous that Apple hasn't addressed this already)

I actually started working on this exact thing some months ago. Had to stop due to other projects. Might finish it at some point.

Btw, I don't think Apple allows apps of this kind (that need to run an AppleScript with permissions) in the Mac App Store.
