search, detect typing pause

on some pages (sorry no great examples) search locks up for a second on the first few characters, I approve of being able to search for only one character, but because this can be intensive it'd be good to look for a pause in typing, especially since this also seems to lock the ability to type until all current results have been processed (arguably that's a bug) (running 2.8.9 at the time of report)
