Degraded performance of link highlighting

I'm a happy user of vrome for over a year.

But in the past months time between hitting f and displaying labels degraded significantly.

I have a decent machine (i7 2.2ghz, 8gb ram) but it takes ~1s to display the labels.

Any ideas what causes this?
