Do you think is it possible to have a reverse key?

I thought to use your tool for "tournament like" to have a impression like this:

It's a good idea to add a flag that lets you render the tree in all four directions not just two (horizontal and vertical).

The script might not be best for your use case though, because in that case the structure is pretty much fixed. I would probably design a fixed SVG in something like Inkscape and write a short script to customize the labels.
