error related to Cypher + CASE + null (note, not a general cypher issue, only occurs with JDBC)

The problem is that Cypher computes -1 as `Long` value in the result and the default implementation of the Neo4j driver returned 0 on all Objects that were not `Integer`...

Yeah but that was intentional that it is a wrapper of the real node so all operations on it should pass through. Perhaps the naming with "virtual" was not that...
