Can't switch between 2 windows of the same app.
You can't switch between 2 windows of the same application because the windows' preview always shows under the taskbar, so when you put the taskbar on the top, the preview goes up and is not visible as it's outside of the screen. Repro steps:
- open 2 notepad windows
- minimize the windows
- click in notepad in the taskbar. Issue: Notepad's window preview is not visible, hence you can't open the minimized notepad again (unless you use Alt+Tab)
Thank you for reporting this issue! I realize this is probably the most annoying issue with setting the taskbar to the top. Unfortunately, I do not know of a way to fix it by adjusting the registry. There are a few workarounds. However, these might not be very usable depending on how you are used to use Windows.
- I enabled the 'Task View' button on the taskbar. Whenever I want to switch to a different window I click on the icon first, afterwards I select the window I want.
- Another possibility is to 'Win+tab'. This is practically the same as clicking the 'Task View' button. By using 'Win+tab' instead of 'Alt+tab' I find it easier to select the desired application window.
I am sorry I do not have a better solution for this at the moment. It is a direct consequence of the new taskbar UI from Microsoft and the fact that everything seems to be built hardcoded. I did not find any registry settings which change the direction (below taskbar vs above taskbar) the windows are shown.
Not sure if it will help, but evidently at one time Windows 10 had the same, or similar issue, and I found this post talking about it. I'm not a developer, but maybe it might give you some ideas of what else to look for?? Windows not being brought to front
I guess I have the same issue. Taskbar on bottom, the grouped applications (e.g., two explorer windows) selection view is shown above of the task bar. Taskbar on top, probably the grouped applications selection view is still shown above the taskbar, so there's no chance to click on it ;)
Until this is solved, I think I will stick with https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher to bring back the old Start Menu. What were the Windows Developers thinking...?
A temporary solution to this is right clicking (instead of left clicking), so you get the list of recent files. The open files will appear at the top of the list. It's not exactly the same, but it works.
@aberdean: Thanks for this! But it doesn't work in some important usage cases. For example, in Chrome, you will not get a list of recent windows, just a list of recent tabs. More of my personal issue: it doesn't work with my Windows Explorer substitute, Director Opus. I often have a lot of DOPUS windows open at a time, it is crucial to be able to switch between them quickly. I blame Microsoft.

@Xendiadyon Ditto. I recommend that for anyone who really needs access to the grouped applications list.
Due to my specific message posted in issue 25 this upcoming feature in Taskbar11 is now halted. However, I would recommend using @Naamloos Open Source solution for the time being. It works fairly well combined with Taskbar11 and should be a temporary fix.
