Is this safe with 3?

@jgericke we haven't run it using Python 3 (we use all Python 2.7) internally, but I don't believe there's any major blocker that would prevent it from working. If anything, there may be a few syntax things that need to change before it will run — would be happy to merge a PR if you're interested!
