i was under the impression that the latest (rnb 1.8.0 from official ubu repos) had integrated tags functionality with hashtags rather than the old style tags. but, the old right-side window/frame for tags is still visible in 1.8.0. any plans to get rid of it anytime soon?

RNB 1.8.0 on Xubuntu 13.10 (always updated).

Yes , I plan to get rid of this pane eventually. Not sure when this will hapen though since backwards compatibility is important.

The way I use tags in rednotebook is to track all the important topics I take notes about, so a tag (category, in rednotebook terms) might be the name of a customer or project, and the comment (tag in rednotebook terms) will be a short sentence describing what the note is about. When I select the tag (category) in the search field, I get a very helpful list of dates and comments in the left pane, from which I can follow the development of the topic and easily flip between the full notes. I have never seen this feature in any other note-taking tool, and it's a killer feature in my opinion. I like the hashtags as well. They are very convenient to add on the fly, but they don't give the excelent overview with short sentences that I can get with the old tags. Maybe hashtags could be extended with a comment, like #rednotebook[Idea about new hashtag function]? Or maybe hashtags could show the most previous heading next to the date in the search result. The important thing for me is to get the list of dates and sentences for the topic/tag. If the tags are managed in a right pane, or as inline formated text, is egal.

Oops, think I accidently changed the status.

I wish to request that the Tag Pane is not removed. I use it all the time, for all my tags, and I hope it doesn't go because then all my tags will be redundant The tag pane provides more useful search results than hashtags!

If the Tag Pane confuses people, then just disable it by default, but leave a preference option to re-enable it, for those who want to use it.

Thanks for the clarification. I think disabling the tag frame by default, but keeping it available is a good option.

The current plan is to collect all use cases for the right-side tags panel, make sure that the inline hashtags and the search support them, and then remove the right-side tags panel. So far, the main use case that's not covered by hashtags is getting a list of "subtags" belonging to a tag. If you feel like something else is missing, please add it here.

I just upgraded and found that the Tag column is missing. How do I get all my tag information back? Virginia

First, try to see if you can drag the right-hand side edge from right to left to reveal the column. If that doesn't work, you need to open $HOME/.rednotebook/configuration.cfg and set showTagsPane to 1.

Thank you for replying so soon. Setting showTagsPane worked for me. Is the Tag pane going away and if so, how would I save my tag information?

In a future version the tag information will be moved into the main text field. The proposed format is

#mytag: content of tag #myothertag: content of other tag
