To further clarify my previous comment: What I was suggesting requires a special intermediate mode. Enter this from edit mode if the user switches to a device that draws differently...

There is a much simpler "bitesize" version that could be used as a stopgap. Just return to freehand mode whenever the device is changed (to another device that can draw)....
