It looks like when you create a squad the power displayed for the squad is calculated at create time and attached to that squad. The power displayed for that squad does not change as you upgrade characters in the squad. It does however look like editing the squad and saving it without making any changes will force an update in the power displayed on the My Squads page. I don't know if this behavior is intentional or not, but it seems like this value should be something that gets updated when a user's data in synced.
