We found the root cause of this bug outside VOLK. I'm closing this issue now.

Merging this PR now, since #609 contains the documentation change that should make it clear that MIPS support is experimental.

Since we use `cpu_features` with MIPS etc. now, and things still work, I suggest to close this issue.

Closing this PR now. There's reason to hope that this issue doesn't get raised again on later distros.

[MSVC may receive `atomic` support](https://devblogs.microsoft.com/cppblog/c11-atomics-in-visual-studio-2022-version-17-5-preview-2/) soon-ish. In case MSVC supports `threads` as well, this PR would be interesting again. As a side note: the most exciting feature that we'd wait...

This draft PR was introduced because of a bug that turned out to be outside of VOLK. I'm closing this PR now.

This is essentially the same Issue as #600 . Since GR used it, we might follow.

@AstroP25 does the latest VOLK version on `main` fix your issue? Did you find out how to fix it? I suggest we close this issue if it is solved.

We improved the situation with `cpu_features` over the last couple of months. I'm closing this issue now. Feel free to re-open it, in case this is still an issue.

@jsallay I guess @ashley-b 's question is mostly direct at you. I'd like to merge this as soon as all issues are fixed. That would be 1. the DCO issue...
