Versioning of WebSocket protocols/encoders/decoders

I'd like o see an example/approach, that show us how to deal with different versions of a websocket protocols, ie. encoders/decoders.

Is the appropriate decoder identified by peeking into the string / bytearray payload? That would mean, we make version numbers part of the business data..?!
