We need to allow for this by using an array format. The Laravel docs say this might happen and to use an array.
What URL are you expecting to be in there?
Agreed its a bug. But in my opinion it's better to use the .env option anyway. The other way is removed in v3, it's confusing.
Did you move the page using drag/drop in the CP?

While I agree that this would be a good feature, I'm not really sure if this is considered a bug. The route variables simply inject the values from the entry...

What are you having trouble with?
Can you provide a repo with this problem reproduced so we can investigate?
