Paper model
2D split keyboards such as the Kyria have paper cutouts you can (2D) print on your (2D) printer to get a feel for where the keys are with a minimum of effort and expense. Maybe there should be the same sort of thing for Dactyl-based keyboards. It would be a little more complicated - it would take some origami - but it would be cheap to build and cool.
