Fix read-only mode

In read-only mode, open data file as read-only to avoid crash on read-only filesystems

We have a dependency on this module which is now affected by this problem.

@jamesls, any chance you have the time to merge and make a release? If no, would it be possible to give @semidbm (or me) access to do so?
