Glad you have a workaround. The next version of react-arborist will depend on react-aria's use-drag/drop hooks rather than the aging react-dnd. These issues should not longer be a problem.
Next version will not rely on react-dnd anymore (thank God)
This does look much better! I'm not as familiar with the drag and drop api. How would you style the drag preview?

Close animations are very difficult in React. I have always wanted a way to add animation to this library. I believe there may be some opportunity with the view-transition api...
You're right. It's not possible today. I'll consider adding this ability in a future release.
