Bug: Links to external files not working

Links to external files are not getting handled properly.

Observed behavior: Links like [A paper](paper.pdf) are opened as text files in a new Neovim buffer (with new file template if configured). Expected behavior: The file is handled and opened in the OS's default program for the filetype.
