Reference users from external Mysql database?

Have not got it running yet, but the mysql setting intrigued me to wonder if it is somehow possible to get users from an external mysql database in read only mode.

Seems like a pretty common configuration to reference another software, for example a forum (also php based,with standard bcrypt password hashes) or such on the same server for users.
