update dependencies, engine and fix implications

I had some trouble building the recent version with updated dependencies which required some refactoring.

Not everything has been tested, but it builds without errors now.

I'm unsure about the fullcalendar/dist/ imports. It seems to work without them and they were never exported by fullcalendar afaict.

Please review thoroughly before accepting/merging.
