Please explain jack transport for the end user

The wiki home page lacks a paragraph or even a sentence explaining just what "jack transport" is, in layman's terms. I'd be happy to help out, but even visiting the pages linked from https://github.com/jackaudio/jackaudio.github.com/wiki#jack-transport--jack-timebase I still don't have a clue :(
