There is no error here. Jack probably couldn't start because the parameters were illegal. This is a quite big problem with jack though, that it doesn't say anything about why it failed.

But there's another thing here. Jackd is started like this: "./jackd ...". That's a unix way to start a program in the current path. I didn't think it was done like that on Windows as well?

kmatheussen avatar Jan 12 '21 20:01 kmatheussen

Anyway, you can try this version of qjackctl: http://users.notam02.no/~kjetism/qjackctl.exe . This version of qjackctl doesn't include the "-r" and "-p" arguments unless it's explicitly set to non-default values, which very often fixes this specific problem.

kmatheussen avatar Jan 12 '21 20:01 kmatheussen

This user has 1.9.17 binary, so that means using the test build I made a few days ago. Those patches are already included there, as committed in the qjackctl repo.

It is best to not confuse users here please.

As I see the error now, seems like qjackctl as a client could not connect to the jack server. Missing the "-S -X winmme" options that should be there by default (and instead has "-p128") tells me some settings were changed on qjackctl GUI that were not meant to be changed.

Removing the custom "-p128" likely fixes this issue.

falkTX avatar Jan 12 '21 20:01 falkTX

Does this version of qjackctl have the "Clean" button to reset preferences? In case, it would probably be a good advice to click this button.

kmatheussen avatar Jan 12 '21 20:01 kmatheussen

If not, just run this program first to reset qjackctl preferences: https://github.com/kmatheussen/reset_qjackctl/tree/main/bin_windows

Sorry, my English is not very good. I hope you can understand my description.

I successfully run jack audio on a laptop with a new windows 10 system.

But unfortunately, it can't run on my two windows hosts, and the errors are the same. It could be a software conflict

Tried running with "jackd", "jackd -S -X winmme" and other common server prefixes, but it doesn't budge. Looks like things go wrong right after Portaudio should initialize.

Assuming JackCtl uses portaudio's list function, that part does work as when the UI performs a probe I get an accurate list back.

Running jackd from the command line, I can similarly list devices by:

jackd -dportaudio -l

which produces the list, but ends with:

Cannot initialize driver JackServer::Open failed with -1 Failed to open server

Opening my ASIO device, or opening JackRouter.dll might be the problematic part. I can see that the correct 64-bit jackrouter.dll is registered in windows though, and there is only one such listing.

I'm new to JACK, so I'm only halfway sure what I'm doing. Perhaps I'll take a couple of days and see if I can compile from source so I can step through in the debugger.

mzandvliet avatar Feb 11 '21 17:02 mzandvliet

Same thing here but also a novice at JACK so it could be me. Looks you have to cross compile in Linux to build is that right? I guess I could use a Virtual Machine.... I tried installing older releases - back to 17 but that didn't help

guqin avatar Aug 26 '21 23:08 guqin

In theory it should be possible under msys2 environment on windows too. I had success building other software under msys2's mingw.

This might sound a bit trivial but maybe it is helpful for someone who ends up here. I ran into similar starting issues with QjackCtl and after hours of trying found out that it was just a matter of too short start delay (can be increased under settings->advanced).

After installing 1.9.19 and setting the start delay to 10 seconds I get a functioning low-latency asio server! Thanks for that. :)

This has always been a big problem on windows. Maybe on mac and linux as well. Perhaps qjackctl should show a requester if it times out, with options to give up or wait even longer.

Hi all, i also can confirm this "Problem: Could not connect to JACK server as client. - Overall operation failed. - Unable to connect to server. Please check the messages window for more info." on Windows. Increasing Advanced _> start delay to 10s solved this issue.

Hi, in my case 10s was still returning the same error. Made it 20s and have no longer the problem.
