Using Vite unlocks a lot of potential customizability that the classic compiler didn't have.

Sure, I'm definitely open to accepting PRs for this! My only real requirements are HMR in dev and a working prod build ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe we can start a tracking issue that has a list of tasks to complete for the migration to vite? A project might be better. This might help contributors who want to help make this happen.
