Suggestion for a solution this issue:

Add an option to display the dotted assignment lines for the transition lables (preferably in a light gray colour, similar to the grid lines).

Users should be able to turn this feature on and off via a hotkey.

This Statechart illustrates the issue. Its pretty hard to figure out which label belongs to which transition.

The user should be able to display the dotted assignment lines via two ways:

1. temporary display with a keypress (e.g. while holding down a modifier key like ALT)
2. permanent display of the lines toggleable via a checkbox in diagram properties view.
