istio.io blog should allow simple labels to category blogs and even incorporate good istio blogs from other sites

Check cilium blog as a good example, they have labels and can easily incorporate good blogs from other sites.

If we don't already have designs for this, we can use the existing year-buttons for the categories, and toss the years into a dropdown or just remove it. Thoughts?

That seems like a good idea. We could have the by-year listings appear similar to how About drops down.

The Istio blog at the moment is a 'river of news' style, which just lists posts from oldest all the way to newest. To support external posts, we'd either have to (a) have them appear as a headline, which when clicked, takes you to an external post instead of an internal one, or (b) move to a "social card" style design (as you see on cilium.io) which suggests custom artwork for every post.

It doesn't look like the labels on cilium.io "do" anything, as in you can't select to filter only by a certain topic.

If we can decide on a rough desired design, I'd like to see some site redesign work in the 1.24/Ambient GA timeframe, and this could be included in that.
