Grouped Layer Control with R

Has anyone had any success implementing Grouped Layer Control with Leaflet for R? This would be very helpful to have as there are limited abilities to create sub-groups, leaving one with 20 layers such as in my case with no ability to categorize existing groups.

I'm also interested in knowing whether this functionality has been ported to the R version of leaflet. Given that this repo is no longer maintained, I should imagine this functionality might never make it over? @jerryhall @A-OverKill
