VNC just gives a cursor

All I get when connecting to vnc (after following the updated instructions in the wiki) is a black screen and a cursor (it changes to this loading indicator from a normal cursor after clicking). I can't get any i3 commands to workimage

there are no errors in the vnc output or in the i3 logs
