The natural earth dataset is a multi-gigabyte public domain archive of useful geospatial base imagery and vector data.

There was some effort back in 2010 to put the files on bittorrent through mininova (which is no more, alas the mutable web!) but it doesn't seem like these work any more.

If naturalearthdata.com goes down, it doesn't seem like there is anywhere else to get this important data.
