Generating splash and icon images duplicates Cordova iOS resource entries

before I jump into describing the issue: I see github.com/ionic-team/cordova-res now redirects to github.com/ionic-team/capacitor-assets, this seems to imply that Cordova support is diminishing more and more..

surely this Cordova resource generator can't be entirely replaced by a Capacitor assets generator? wouldn't it make more sense to make a separate version of this specifically for Capacitor? what about Cordova support? we can't all jump on the Capacitor bandwagon at the same time...

The Problem

running the command ionic cordova resources inside my Ionic project duplicates all icon and splash screen resource entries for the iOS platform.

the Android resource entries update correctly, so this only affects the iOS entries.

Intermediate Workaround

manually removing all <icon> and <splash> entries from <platform name="ios"> and regenerating resources updates the entries correctly.
