can't extend an image that needs to be cropped

In cases where an image is rectangular and needs to be cropped to a square, it could be convenient to be able to add a (white by default?) background and crop to a larger zone than the smallest dimension. Example of a problematic case, where I need to go back to GIMP:

dont know on mobile, but on desktop you can scroll down the size of the image to fit as you want to

aha, then maybe start by fitting the largest dimension, rather than the shortest as it is the case at the moment, to make this possibility more explicit
