Handling of \ escape sequences in queries

I have a bibtex file with an author entry of author = Maksimovi\'{c}, Petar and I wish to query for this author's last name.

I try the query bibtex["@*[author ~= Maksimovi\\'{c}]"] but receive no results. However the query b["@*[author ~= Maksimovi\\\\'{c}]"] works.

Could you please add guidance in the readme for how to handle backslashes in bibtex queries, or confirm that the escape handling for queries is...weird.
