The Anycast method was designed without a straightforward detection

Open janwillemstegink opened this issue 1 year ago • 1 comments

Anycast technique is used to connect to an alternative name server for accessibility. Unfortunately, the only clumsy way to detect the use of Anycast is via other Anycast servers around the world.

Tools for analysis cannot handle detection. The Anycast method was designed without a straightforward detection.

This is a showstopper. Perhaps internet.nl on Github can be the platform to share and move technically forward.

I think BGPtools does a nice job, see https://bgp.tools/kb/anycatch and https://github.com/bgptools/anycast-prefixes. Currently Internet.nl scans all IP addresses from one Point of Presence (POP).

Do you have any concrete proposals for Internet.nl in regard to anycast?

I could think of:

  • Indicating an IP is using anycast with BGP tools list (do-able).
  • Checking an anycast address from multiple POPs (very complex compared to current situation).

However even adding the anycast indication: external patches are welcome, I cannot see the team working on this soon without a clear urgency.
