design request: move the "borrow banner" to optimize the vertical space available

Hi,

I would like to propose the consideration of moving the "borrow banner" (as shown below) to some other position on the page (eg. onto the left sidebar) or at least being able to click the banner away.

Is your feature request related to a problem? What is the motivation for implementing this feature?

The vertical screen space on most screens is often very precious and the borrow banner reduces quite a lot of that vertical screen space available to the content (especially noticeable on lower-resolution screens)

What is the proposed solution / implementation? Is there a precedent for this approach succeeding elsewhere?

I understand how important this borrow-functionality is, so a careful redesign of that UI would be needed if it were to be moved to the sidebar.

A user should be able to easily see the borrow status and act upon it when needed. A prominently displayed show / hide borrow menu-toggle button in the left sidebar would be an idea OR add all the borrow actions: "return", "borrow for 14 days", "purchase" directly to that left sidebar as buttons with text labels.

Perhaps place an initial "Borrow ends at ..." message at the top, which is hidden once a user starts interacting with the book contents (by a click on the book content element). The borrow-status message could still be viewed from a sidebar icon / message. Perhaps use a special color / element-flashing for really important borrow issues.

How will you know if this change is successful? What specific metrics are relevant and how do you expect them to change?

If the full vertical screen space available on the device can be fully used for the book contents AND the user is still aware of the borrow state and possible borrow actions.
