Conversation suddenly continues in new context

I've had several conversations (lengthier ones perhaps) where suddenly a reply I send goes to a new page and the context is reset. I assumed this had something to do with context length, but simply navigating back to the thread and continuing seems to work. I'm not sure what's causing this, but it has happened several times.
