add compatibility with the pre 1.3.0

Thanks for sending me the pull request. I am holding your changes for time being because i am not sure whether mongo driver prior to 1.3.0 have have all the methods and params i am giving in my library as is. I will test it and if everything is fine then i will merge your contribution.
