Integration between the Planner and Github

Open finger563 opened this issue 2 years ago • 99 comments

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. I would like to be able to link github issues / PRs / etc. to tasks in the Planner app / integration that's also within Teams - both Github and Planner have Kanban representations for project tasks and it would be beneficial if they could be somewhat / somehow linked.

Describe the solution you'd like Being able to link a task in the Planner to an Issue / PR in Github directly - with actions performed on one affecting the other (e.g. closing). Automatically creating / linking tasks in Planner from a linked repo's Issues / PRs - similar to how the same issues / PRs can be linked to Github's Projects.

Describe alternatives you've considered Manually copying a link to the issue / PR in a new task every time a new issue / pr is created in GH - which requires a further manual update when the issue is closed. It's not horrible right now, but better integration would definitely be nice :)

Additional context Not really - maybe it's not possible or feasible in a nice, relatively generic way; but hopefully enough smart minds getting together can figure something out :)

@finger563 This is an interesting idea but, partly, it falls outside my team.
First we need to understand the usage of planner and how popular is this Planner+GitHub scenario. And then work with Teams platform to understand how feasible it is.

I will bring it up during our interactions with Platform team. Will let you know if I have any updates.

Interested in this progress

I'd like to voice interest in this as well. I envision something similar to Zenhub. Right now we have to choose between using the Kanban style in Teams Planner versus Github issues. If the task exists in both platforms it becomes a huge pain to keep both in sync.

Like everyone else here, I also support this.

Currently, my team and I are looking to move off from Planner to a third party that supports this scenario - and I imagine that most teams that use Github and have Microsoft 365 are doing something similar because of the hassle of keeping tasks in sync across Planner and Github.

We'd be interested in this as well. We have some teams in the department (helpdesk, NOC) that don't use github, and if we could use Planner to track the entire deparmtent's work I could see that being really useful.

I support this idea. We love using Planner for our smaller projects, and I would be sorely tempted to quit Jira if there were a way to link the code to the cards.

I'd really like to see integration between these two Microsoft products. Our team is currently using a 3rd-party solution, but I'd like to move in this direction to keep things under one "roof". Frankly, I'm a little surprised MS hasn't done more work here as it seems like a missed opportunity.

+1. Rich features offered by Microsoft Planner, combined with issues management using Github, is our ideal scenario. Please consider this as an integration that would solve many problems at once. Fully support it.

We are using Microsoft Products in our company, some integration like a huge 3rd-party solution has would be amazing for us. We don't want to move out from Planner.

+1 I like to see and use this feature

I support this feature as well. This is exactly what we need in our organization!

Yes, this is a great idea and i would like to see implemented.

+1 This would drastically reduce time spent maintaining two synced lists

+1 I would like to use one central application rather than multiple

+1 I like to see microsoft Planner and To-do list be connected with Github in a way that is easy to understand

+1 this would increase the connection between project management members and software developers

J-Franko avatar Apr 27 '22 13:04 J-Franko

@ashokirla is there any news on this (even if just which team would handle it)? It seems that there's general interest in this connection.

zeeraktalat avatar Apr 29 '22 18:04 zeeraktalat

+1 In many cases management doesn't use GitHub but use Planner within Teams. On the other hand, for developers it's easier to track tasks/bugs in GitHub issues. It will be awesome if we could at least have a simple link/connection between a GitHub issue and a task in Planner.

+1 This would help satisfy both management and development teams, as business people seem to prefer planner, but planner isn't a very effective tool for development teams.

+1 This will bring to Planner a much needed feature that companies not associated with Github, like Atlassian already offer this inside Jira. Being able to reference github issues and PRs inside a Kanban card is a much needed feature.
