Default sort by is overridden

Could you please explain a purpose of this override https://github.com/integer-net/solr-magento1/blob/master/src/app/code/community/IntegerNet/Solr/Model/Observer.php#L136 ?

The problem is that it is neglecting a value set in Magento admin.
