In that thought, what would also be nice to have is to accept nicknames too, so that you could for example do:

/VERSION OperServ

Which would redirect the VERSION (or any other) command to the appropriate server the nickname is on.

That last one might work entirely around hidewhois if it's enabled. And if it's not enabled, you can just whois them first anyway. I mean, that method is faster, being one command rather than two, but if we refuse to work around hidewhois, it doesn't change a heck of a lot.
